Construction will begin in March on a project that could see about half of the 7-acre Mulligan Family Fun Center in Murrieta converted into a  Western-themed water park, a company official said Friday.

The first phase of the water park is expected to open this summer and will consist of five-speed slides, multi-level platforms, interactive aquatic controls and what is being called a “Big Splash Pumping Station,” a company news release stated.

Murrieta Mayor Randon Lane said adding a water park would be good for the community.

“Anything we get as far as a water park is a benefit to the residents, especially with the heat we get in the region,” Lane said. “I’ll take my kids there.”

The project’s initial phase is expected to cost between $1.2 million and $1.5 million, said Robert J. Araiza, marketing director for Mulligan Family Fun Centers.

“The market is prime for it,” Araiza said of the decision. “The water park that was supposed to go in Temecula is no longer an option.”

In Temecula, Clearwater Waterpark Development, which built Wild Rivers Waterpark in Irvine, had wanted to build a water park on 20 acres on Diaz Road and west of Interstate 15.

The company, however, was unable to secure funding for a project.

Mulligan Center opened in Murrieta in March 1996 and offers a variety of activities, including miniature golf, go-cart racing, laser tag, and batting cages. Read the full article here

Mulligan Family Fun Center Opens Water Attraction

Approaching the water slides at, one might think they are at a lavish water park, instead of in the heart of Murrieta next to the bustling Interstate 15.

“This is a great new destination for us,” said Murrieta resident Rusti Banagas. “It’s big, but not big enough to lose your child–good for those spontaneous 90-degree days.”

Banagas brought her 2-year-old son, Cash, to play in the toddler area, where the height requirement is only 36 inches.

“Parents can stand right next to the slide so the kids feel safe. They also don’t dump into a pool, so the children aren’t so scared and parents don’t have to hurry or get wet to get their child,” Banagas said.

Five slides comprise the fun center’s newest attraction.

While the area officially opened July 22, Mulligan celebrated Saturday by offering special pricing and barbecued hamburgers. The local radio station KATY was also on hand–the station had given away free passes to the family fun center as part of a weeklong promotion.

Mulligan Group Sales Manager Scott Agajanian explained the attributes of the water feature.

“There are a toddler slide, two smaller slides and two bigger slides on the upper tier,” Agajanian said. “Each slide is monitored by an attendant; the bigger slides are monitored by two attendants.”

Along with the slides, there is a cabana that can be rented for $50 a day and a shaded seating area by the entrance so parents can relax and watch their child.

Many patrons were impressed with the size of the slides and appreciated the consideration and safety precautions Mulligan took in creating the area. See more here
